Exodus 15:19-17:7 / Matthew 22:1-33 / Psalm 27:1-6 / Proverbs 6:20-26
I want to teach you a little bit today, meaning let’s dig a little deeper into a verse that I love to read and quote from Psalm 27:1: The LORD is my light and my salvation – so why should I be afraid? The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger, so why should I tremble?
First, raise your hand if you want to be fearless. Don’t you often wish you were genuinely afraid of nothing? I do! If I were fearless, what might I have done or be prepared to do with my life? That’s a great question to consider all by itself!
Let’s look deeper at Ps 27:1.
The LORD is my light and my salvation – whatever these two words mean, they evidently remove fear, so let’s find out their meaning. Light is light of day, meaning something by which I’m able to clearly see. The LORD allows me to clearly see. Salvation is my rescue, safety, and victory. How many of us are looking for a “hero” to rescue us? Jesus Christ did that when He went to the cross.
Why should I be afraid? Fear causes us to hesitate or stop when we should be moving forward. But if we have the LORD as our light so we can see and as our safety, then we should not fear listening to Him and doing what He says! I promise it will be an adventure.
The LORD is my fortress, protecting me from danger. Fortress is a place of safety, or a harbor. When I think of a fortress, I think of the medieval castles with moats, bridges and ramparts around the top which protected those inside from attack. The LORD is that kind of protection for those who are His.
Why should I tremble? This verse is saying the same thing twice, but the picture is a little different. If I’m trembling, I’m likely not moving anywhere; my feet are probably stuck in place. I can’t even run from trouble. But if I know the LORD is protecting me, what might I do instead of stand and tremble? I might either run from danger, or I may choose to stand and fight. And we’ve talked before that fighting for the Jesus follower is done in prayer and worship.
Envision yourself as protected by God and able to see the path ahead. What were you afraid to do before that you’re willing to brave now?
For me, it’s pushing forward with allowing myself to be StilltheMom. It’s me being willing to share my life and my story, even knowing that some will receive, some will ignore, and some will reject my message. But God has told me to move forward and He has given me the plan, so forward I will go!
Will you do the same with me?
