Read the Bible in One Year: Day 34 – We Are All Equal

Exodus 17:8-19:15 / Matthew 22:34-23:12 / Psalm 27:7-14 / Proverbs 6:27-35

Moses was wearing himself out trying to take care of every situation that came up with the people God had given him to lead.  What he failed to realize was, he did not have to stand alone in leading them.  It wasn’t until his father-in-law Jethro saw what he was doing – working from morning until evening – that Jethro advised Moses to appoint other leaders to help with smaller matters, leaving Moses to decide larger matters and meet with God.

And this has been an oversight within the body of Christ, both from the perspective of the leaders and from the perspective of those within the body.  What is the oversight?  That the one man or woman in the pulpit, or even the small group of appointed leaders must bear the burden for the whole body.  I don’t believe God intended the church to operate this way.

Ephesians 4 says the called ministries of pastor/teacher, prophet, apostle and evangelist are meant to equip and activate the rest of the body to do the work.  That means everyone has work to do.  Everyone is expected to learn, grow, mature and serve.  But sadly, many groups of believers are plagued with the few doing most of the work while the many sit and watch.

In Matthew 23:8 Jesus said, “…all of you are equal as brothers and sisters.”  The context is that of the religious leaders taking pride in their position and prominence within the community.  But Jesus is saying that no matter our gifts, calling or talents, we are all equal in His eyes!

That’s what we are seeking to do in the church that meets in our home – equip everyone to know and understand their gift and position within the body, then activate them to operate there.  It’s such a joy too – seeing each one take ownership within the community of believers.  There’s no fear of competition or stepping on another’s toes; there is plenty of space for everyone to operate as called.

Now that we’re meeting this way, I’m finding that this type of fellowship has been hidden as a dream in my heart for years!  I feel so blessed to be part of what God is doing at Bethesda Springs House of Mercy and Grace.  If you don’t have a church home, and you’re in the Knoxville area, you’re always welcome to visit!
