I’ll be spending four weeks each month on a chosen topic, however, there will be an extra week each quarter so I will either extend our topic or talk about something else. This month I’m choosing to talk about something else. I want to give you a personal peek into my devotional time so I’m going to share a conversation the Lord and I recently had. Then I want to do a short study to go along with that conversation.
Most mornings, as I’m sitting and pondering my day, I’ll begin by saying, “Good morning to Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.” Some days I’ll say, “Good morning, Dad, Jesus, and Breath of Life.” Other days, there will be a different name for each of the Three in One that comes to mind. One day in February, after saying good morning to Father, I started to say “Jesus.”
But before I got the word out of my mouth, He said, “Today, think of Me as your brother. I want you to think of me that way because I want you to know that we have an equal inheritance.”
The concept that everything Jesus has is mine is not new to me, and I have pondered that He is both my older brother and my friend. But I had never dived deep into what it meant for us to be siblings. That got me thinking about my sister who lives in a house on our property. I started thinking about the fact that she and I share whatever our parents will leave to us.
My next thought was that Jesus and I share the things the Father has left to us. Here is where I want to look at more closely, what some of those things are! What is our inheritance through and with Jesus Christ?
Let’s start with the facts from Romans 8:16-17:
For the Holy Spirit makes God’s fatherhood real to us as he whispers into our innermost being, “You are God’s beloved child!” And since we are his true children, we qualify to share all his treasures, for indeed, we are heirs of God himself. And since we are joined to Christ, we also inherit all that he is and all that he has. The Passion Translation (TPT).
According to those two verses, what do we inherit? All that Jesus is and all that Jesus has. That causes us to be compelled to ask, “Who is Jesus?” and “What does He have?” Great questions, and as happens many times when we’re studying together, I will not have time to exhaust this topic with you. So, let’s look at part of the is and the has of Jesus.
Jesus is the Son of God. (see John 3:16). That means I am a daughter of God, and you are a son or daughter. This fact alone sets the stage for all the other facts. This fact establishes that we are God’s family both by birth and by blood (our new birth through Jesus Christ, and the blood refers to what Jesus accomplished on the cross.)
Jesus is love, joy, peace, patience, etc. (see Galatians 5:22-23) Jesus doesn’t have those things; He is those things, and through Holy Spirit in us, we can also be those things. Not only may I carry love, joy, peace, and patience, but I may also be those things and shift the atmosphere around me. We carry more weight in the earth realm than we realize.
Jesus has been given all authority in Heaven and on earth (see Matthew 28:18). What about us; do we have all authority?
Now you understand that I have imparted to you my authority to trample over his kingdom. You will trample upon every demon before you and overcome every power satan possesses. Absolutely nothing will harm you as you walk in this authority. Luke 10:19 TPT
Jesus has the keys of death, hell, and the grave (see Revelation 1:18). What about us? Matthew 16:19 TPTsays, “I will give you the keys of heaven’s kingdom realm to forbid on earth that which is forbidden in heaven, and to release on earth that which is released in heaven.” (There is much more to the concept of the keys Jesus and we have, but time is too short today).
As you can see, I’ve had time only to scratch the surface of who Jesus is, what He has, and how that translates to who we are and what we have. I hope I’ve sparked your interest and that you’ll do further study to find out more!
Stay tuned for our April topic to be released next week! Until then, have a wonderful rest of March!
