Judges 21 – Ruth 1 / John 4:4-42 / Psalm 105:1-15 / Proverbs 14:25
When Jesus talked with the Samaritan woman, he told her about the living water He was giving away. He said this of the water from the well compared to His water, “Anyone who drinks this water will soon become thirsty again. But those who drink the water I give will never be thirsty again. It becomes a fresh, bubbling spring within them, giving them eternal life.”
Jesus is, of course, not speaking of physical water that is consumed. He is speaking of the water of Holy Spirit that refreshes the spirit and soul of a person. You know how I love word imagery, and I especially enjoy the picture described of the fresh, bubbling spring.
There is another portion of scripture that speaks of water coming from within us in John 7:37-39 On the last day, the climax of the festival, Jesus stood and shouted to the crowds, “Anyone who is thirsty may come to me! Anyone who believes in me may come and drink! For the Scriptures declare, ‘Rivers of living water will flow from his heart.’”(When he said “living water,” he was speaking of the Spirit, who would be given to everyone believing in him. But the Spirit had not yet been given, because Jesus had not yet entered into his glory.)
Until this point in history, God’s Spirit was able only to rest upon men and women: we were not yet able to contain or be temples to house Him. But a time was coming (and that time extends to now) when God’s Spirit would be poured out and would indwell any who asked and believed.
Holy Spirit is a third part of the Trinity of God. He is a living entity Who has many expressions within Christ’s body. He is our teacher, comforter, One who empowers with boldness and many more blessings. Holy Spirit is symbolized by water all throughout scripture. Thus, when we drink of Him, we will no longer be spiritually thirsty.
It is important to be continually filled with Holy Spirit; this should be your daily prayer.
