2 Samuel 17 / John 19:23-42 / Psalm 119:129-152 / Proverbs 16:12-13
When you’re reading your Bible (as I assume you do) do you sometimes forget that you are reading an accurate documentation of history? Do you remember that the people spoken of actually lived on earth in a time several thousand years ago? The stories are real, and the people were real – just like you and me. Sometimes we elevate the people and imagine they were perfect, doing no wrong. That is just not true!
And since you are reading an accurate history, you can trust the words that are written there. Foundational to that, the words were inspired through Holy Spirit. As the men wrote, Holy Spirit was present to bring revelation and to help them remember what they had seen and experienced. That’s why a verse like John 19:35 is an important reminder.
This report is from an eyewitness giving an accurate account. He speaks the truth so that you also may continue to believe.
The account spoken of is that of Jesus’s death on the cross and the fact that not one of His bones were broken as the Old Testament prophecies said would happen. There is another place in scripture that mentions an accurate account of the things that happened during these times in history. That is found in Luke 1:1-4 NLT.
Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among us. They used the eyewitness reports circulating among us from the early disciples.Having carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I also have decided to write an accurate account for you, most honorable Theophilus, so you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught.
Just as both John and Luke have mentioned, I’m confident every author of every book in scripture determined to write an accurate account with an awareness of the fear of the Lord, knowing that future generations would stake their lives on the truth presented. And that’s what we today are doing. We are staking our lives on the truth we find in scripture.
Not only is this truth timeless and accurate, it carries the power of God within its words. Here is another scripture to prove that statement.
Hebrews 4:12-13 NLT For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God. Everything is naked and exposed before his eyes, and he is the one to whom we are accountable.
And one more scripture that proves the worth and value of God’s Word is 2 Timothy 3:16-17 NLT All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
When you’re reading your Bible, remember that the words contained are both accurate and powerful enough to change your life. Treasure God’s Word. Daily meditate on the things spoken, and determine to live your life according to what you’ve heard.
