Read the Bible in One Year Day 351 – Our Inheritance

Nahum 1-3 / Revelation 8 / Psalm 136 / Proverbs 30:7-9

Inheritance. What is an inheritance from an earthly perspective, and what is an inheritance from a heavenly perspective? From an earthly perspective, our inheritance consists of the assets and possessions of an ancestor that are passed along to us once that ancestor leaves earth for their eternity. An earthly inheritance does not last because it is only a natural inheritance.

The inheritance I’m more interested in is the one God gives us spiritually. Yes, He does provide us with physical resources such as food, clothing, shelter, money, etc. But He has also given us an inheritance that will last forever because this spiritual inheritance does not exist on earth. Our spiritual inheritance exists in the realm of the Spirit.

We’ll talk about some of what we’ve inherited through Christ in a minute, but first I want to show you a verse from today’s reading. Psalm 136:21 in theNew Living Translation, (NLT) says, “God gave the land of these kings as an inheritance – His faithful love endures forever.”

This scripture is referring to two kings of the land of Canaan that God gave to His people. God took the land away from these evil kings and gave it to His people. They did have to fight for their inheritance, pushing out the evil people who lived there. But the land belonged to them in the Spirit before they ever engaged in the first physical battle.

We need to remember this also. God has already given us our inheritance in the Spirit realm; it is substance and it is already there. We must accept who we are in Christ and align our hearts and minds with the truth of Heaven before we will see our inheritance manifested in the earth.

Our inheritance is heaven and eternity in the presence of our Lord and Savior. 1 Peter 1:4, “And we have a priceless inheritance—an inheritance that is kept in heaven for you, pure and undefiled, beyond the reach of change and decay.” (NLT)

While I can’t fully describe all that waits for us in heaven, with Jesus Christ being our primary focus once we arrive, here is what Revelation 21:4-7 tells us to expect: ‘“He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.’

And the one sitting on the throne said, ‘Look, I am making everything new!’ And then he said to me, ‘Write this down, for what I tell you is trustworthy and true.’ And he also said, ‘It is finished! I am the Alpha and the Omega—the Beginning and the End. To all who are thirsty I will give freely from the springs of the water of life. All who are victorious will inherit all these blessings, and I will be their God, and they will be my children.’”

We have inherited eternal life with the ability to see God face to face. We have inherited separation from tears, death, sorry, crying and pain. We have inherited water to drink from the springs of the water of life. We have inherited many blessings and we will be His children.

Because we belong to the Father through Jesus Christ, all these things already exist for us in heaven. One day we will see, touch, hear, smell, and taste all the good things God has blessed us with. For now, we dream of being with Him forever. We are His and He is ours.
