Zechariah 9 / Revelation 17 / Psalm 145 / Proverbs 30:32
We’ve talked before about how I taught all my children at home. I didn’t do it because I thought it was a good idea; I did it because when Matthew was 2 years old, God told me to teach them at home. I didn’t know anything about homeschooling, but God quickly connected us with others who were on the same journey. This was in a time before homeschooling was as popular as it is today.
I have three grown children and all three were taught at home from birth to high school graduation. All three are successful in their chosen fields. One is a gifted musician and computer technology, the next one had some nursing training under her belt, then headed toward being a horse trainer and a mom, and the last one has one degree and is working in the corporate world while preparing to go back to school for her bachelor’s degree.
I’m proud of them all. The thing I’m most proud of is that they chose their paths. I saw their skills and gifts early on and worked hard to give them the basics of good character, Bible training, and a solid education. Then it was up to them to hear God and choose a vocational path.
The part of their schooling that I found to be most valuable, was that we read the Bible daily. That way, they heard God’s Word as small children and still hear it in many ways today. There is a beautiful mandate in Psalm 145:4 that affirms God’s word to me about homeschooling. It is this, “Let each generation tell its children of Your mighty acts; let them proclaim Your power.” The New Living Translation, (NLT)
You don’t have to homeschool your children to tell them about God’s mighty acts and His power, but it certainly was handy to have them as a captive audience every day. It is very important that we properly convey God’s greatness, power, authority, majesty, beauty, love… and many other things to the next generation. This is because knowing God as He truly is, supplies each generation the needed anchor to survive as the world gets crazier!
Give your children and grandchildren hope by diligently revealing Jesus Christ to them. Give them what you have, then study to learn so you can give them more. Feed yourself first, then feed those littles. In doing so, you will create a lasting legacy!
