Malachi 1-2 / Revelation 21 / Psalm 149 / Proverbs 31:10-24
It’s confession time. I am not a lover of early mornings; I never have been. Yes, I had to be up by 6:00 in the morning to catch the bus to school, but if given the choice, I’d sleep until about 8:00 after having gone to bed around midnight. Some are early birds, and some are night owls. I wonder why both sayings involve birds…
Those who love mornings enjoy teasing those who don’t and visa-versa. How many of you have heard, “I don’t see how you lay around in bed all day!”? Well, I personally don’t see how you are so chipper and happy in the morning. My brain takes a few hours to gain full function even after my feet hit the floor.
Today’s verse touches on my humorous side as you’ll see. Psalm 149:5 in the New Living Translation, (NLT) says, “Let the faithful rejoice that He honors them. Let them sing for joy as they lie on their beds.” See? I can stay in bed and still sing! That sounds very promising to me. I haven’t tried to lay down during a time of corporate worship; I’m sure that would be frowned upon.
That said, when I was pregnant with Abigail and on bedrest, we used to take a lounge chair and place it out of the way so I could still attend church. Hm, come to think of it, I have worshiped from my bed, uh lounger… If it is first the heart that sings, I believe we can worship God anywhere. That is the point of this verse.
We must not save our worship only for corporate gatherings where others will see us. We must also make time to worship and pray when we’re alone with God. Each expression will look different, depending on whether we have a band, a radio, or only our voice. But if our hearts are worshiping, God is pleased and blessed.
So, just for kicks, the next time you’re lying on your bed, try a little worship. Your spouse may think you’ve lost it, but that’s ok. Jeff is usually asleep so my worship will have to be quiet. I usually pray in a whisper as I’m settling down. I suppose I can also sing in a whisper.
