Numbers 10:1-11:23 / Mark 14:1-21 / Psalm 51 / Proverbs 10:31-32
Psalm 51 is a familiar Psalm. It is the one that was David’s prayer after his sin with Bathsheba. Many Jesus followers have used this Psalm as a prayer of contrition and repentance. The imagery is beautiful and filled with hope, especially in the face of our sin.
Verse 1: Have mercy on me, O God, because of Your unfailing love. Because of Your great compassion, blot out the stain of my sins. Verse 4a: Against You, and You alone, have I sinned…
Let’s first acknowledge that we are now made righteous through the blood of Jesus Christ. That means we are already clean, and we may approach God from that place of being right with Him. However, we must still go to Him for forgiveness when we become aware of sin.
When we approach Him, He’s not standing angrily before us with a big stick waiting to bring punishment. He stands as a loving Father, smiling and ready to forgive us. He is ready to blot out our sin. What does it mean for Him to do that?
Blot out = erase, abolish, destroy. Also, to blot out from memory.
Hebrews 8:12 – I will never again remember their sins.
God has forgiven us, and we are perfect through His Son. In addition, He also wants to forgive us and conform us to the image of His Son. We are both righteous and becoming more like Him. These two truths exist together. When the Father looks at us, He sees the perfection of His Son.
Walk today knowing you are made perfect and righteous because of Jesus Christ!
