Deuteronomy 18-20 / Luke 9:28-50 / Psalm 73 / Proverbs 12:10
There is a thread throughout today’s reading that is disturbing, and that is the topic of the wicked, or those who practice evil. I am often reminded that we don’t wrestle against flesh and blood (Eph 6:12), and that is true. Our true enemy is but one – the devil. But we must not forget that just as God has “agents” on earth – His people, so does satan have agents on earth – those who love to do evil.
I realize this is a heavy topic, but with all that’s happening around us, I believe it’s important to be aware and to operate in discernment, so we know how to respond in days such as this. As hard as it is to fathom, there are people around us who love evil, who are tools of the devil.
That said, I still believe most people are good and want to do what’s right. Most of us would rather work our jobs, take care of our families, go to church and be left alone. I get that, and I understand not wanting to “pick a fight” or even to enter a battle, especially if it’s not our battle.
But in general, what is the responsibility of the body of Christ when it comes to defending ourselves, our families and our friends against the schemes of the evil one and those he uses to do evil? It’s a great question, and one I feel we must explore. I won’t be able to fully address this, but I have some places for us to start!
Thankfully, we no longer live in Old Testament times when the people of God were instructed to wipe out the nations they were dispossessing from the Promised Land God was giving them. They weren’t just being mean in wiping them out (and yes, I’m aware I’m talking about killing… not an easy subject, and one I wouldn’t want to be part of.). God told His people to rid the land of those who were practicing evil things. If you want to know what type of evil things, feel free to read Deuteronomy 18:10-14.
In Luke 9:44 it says, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies.” Enemies is also translated “men”. But let’s note that the men Jesus was handed over to did not believe He was the Son of God and they were intent on murdering Him. They were working against Him (even though we know this evil plan brought us eternal life!)
In Psalm 73 we read about the proud, those who speak only evil and in their pride seek to crush others. They are referred to as wicked people. Wicked is morally wrong; concretely, an (actively) bad person; condemned, guilty, ungodly, wicked (man), that did wrong.
So, what are we to do? We may or may not come into contact with truly wicked people personally, but they are certainly affecting our nation and our world (and this is not a political post). God has a plan for this world, but so does satan. God wants to save His people and satan wants to destroy any and all he can.
Once we’re aware that evil exists and is actively fighting against God’s plan, how do we respond? Following awareness is realizing our authority in Christ, and using that authority in prayer. Before we pray, we must “armor up”. Please read through Ephesians 6:10-18 and put your armor on! Then pray – 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 Always be joyful. 17 Never stop praying. 18 Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.
And keep on praying – do not give up – do not allow yourself to be distracted or tired. God’s Spirit will sustain you as you ask for your eyes to be opened and that your strength be renewed.
Isaiah 40:31 But those who trust in the Lord will find new strength. They will soar high on wings like eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.
There is no time for fear. There is no time for complaining or excuses, because we have a plan. There is no time for claiming to be unaware because now you know. If you want to talk further, please e-mail me privately by scrolling to the bottom and entering your e-mail into the form.
A few weeks ago, I ran across a phrase in a Jim Caviezel video – God woke you up for a reason. And that He has. I’m standing, I’m praying, I’m not giving up on the plan God has for myself and for this world. After all, it is His! And I am His!The earth is the Lord’s and the fullness thereof –Psalm 24:1-3
