Read the Bible in One Year: Day 86 – The Wise One Learns

Deuteronomy 7-8 / Luke 7:37-8:3 / Psalm 69:1-18 / Proverbs 12:1

To learn, you must love discipline; it is stupid to hate correction. (Proverbs 12:1)

Discipline as used here is not structured time, with lists and neat piles on your desk. Some think that to learn we have to be orderly and committed to a regular routine, and while that is true, we must also be teachable and humble, willing to be corrected.

As I continue daily to read through scripture, the Lord is reshaping my doctrine. Over the years I’ve picked up some beliefs and ways of thinking that didn’t quite line up with God’s Word. We don’t always realize that in the moment. Every man and woman sees and knows only in part. We do the best we can to understand the Bible with the help of Holy Spirit.

That’s why it’s important not only to spend time with other Jesus followers studying what God said, but we must also read the Bible for ourselves. If you’ve never read the Bible for yourself outside a service, I’d love to encourage you to do so. If you have questions, find another believer who knows the Bible and ask.

Stupid is one of those words we were not allowed to say as pastor’s kids; neither were our kids allowed to say it. What does stupid mean? In this context it means “foolish” which is the opposite of wise.

I suppose we should reconcile ourselves to being humble and teachable. Because I sure don’t want to be stupid and foolish!
